As a Java Backend Developer, you will make an impact by designing and delivering scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs that support enterprise applications. You will be a valued member of the engineering team and work collaboratively with product owners, architects, and cross-functional teams to build modern, cloud-native solutions.

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 4 days a week in a client or Cognizant office in Toronto, ON. In this role, you will:
- Design, develop, and maintain Java-based microservices and RESTful APIs using Spring Boot and modern design patterns.
- Build scalable, resilient backend systems aligned with cloud-native and enterprise architecture standards.
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines by integrating and automating build, testing, and deployment processes.
- Ensure application quality through unit, integration, and functional testing, along with code reviews.
- Monitor application performance and support production systems, ensuring stability and reliability.
What you need to have to be considered
- 7–12 years of experience in backend development with strong expertise in Java and Spring Boot (microservices architecture).
- Hands-on experience building and optimizing RESTful APIs aligned with OpenAPI standards.
- Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or OpenShift.
- Proficiency in containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines and Git-based version control (e.g., GitHub Actions).
- Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including testing, code quality, and performance optimization.
These will help you stand out
- Experience with frontend technologies such as Angular.
- Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Splunk, Dynatrace).
- Exposure to AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot.
- Experience refactoring legacy systems and improving application performance.
- Ability to mentor junior developers and contribute to knowledge sharing initiatives.

Salary and Other Compensation:
The annual salary for this position is between $61,000 - $91,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
